Battling Internet Addiction

At Anonymous Academy, there is a lot of concern about students' online activity - both the amount of time they spend online and the way they use the internet. The school blocks Facebook and Myspace and the students have to promise not to look at pornography on school computers. As faculty, we have had workshops on recognizing and treating internet addiction; apparently, a lot of the students who come to school looking like they were abusing substances until the wee hours were actually on their computers all night.

That's why I think that the Chinese are on to something with their halfway houses for internet-addicted teens. As Wang Hui explains, social workers "wander around in nearby Internet bars at night and bring them to the halfway house if the teen agrees." He emphasizes that "none of the teenagers are forced to come here." I think Wang Hui might be in a lot of trouble pretty soon. Still, it's an approach to consider.

The few times I've strolled around MySpace at 2 in the morning or whenever because of partying or insomnia, I spot so many people online it's incredible. I don't know - my 'net connection seems to get wacky and slow after a while and I turn my PC off to do something else ... it could be a virus but I see it as a great 'net time-limiter. :-)
